A power cut left tens of thousands of shops and homes without electricity at lunchtime but, despite initial fears, the lights were back on in time for X Factor singer Chico to flick the switch for the festive display at Merry Hill and for Neighbours star Patrick Harvey to launch the Christmas celebrations in Brierley Hill town centre.Chico entertained the crowds with some of his crazy moves and music as well as signing autographs and meeting five lucky competition winners.
They included Roz Southall, aged 62, who said she was absolutely thrilled to meet the star. She said: "He is just wonderful, his lips are like velvet, I would like to get some of what he is using!"
Having not long come out of hospital she said meeting him has put a smile back on her face, she added: "I needed cheering up after coming out of hospital as I suffer from Crohn's disease. This has just made my day."
Charlotte O'Dwyer-Haynes, aged five, added: "He is very nice, I want my dad to be like Chico."
This year the Christmas decorations at the Merry Hill Centre have been given a complete overhaul with a new silver, pink and purple theme.
Jennifer Morris, spokesman for the MerryHill Centre, said: "This year we have got a new decoration scheme for the centre."
