Ruling due over surgery plans
A final decision over controversial efforts to build a multi-million pound health centre next to a Rugeley school is expected to be made next week. The plans include closing the town's Aelfgar Surgery.
The scheme for the site of the former Western Springs Infant School meant the surgery's services would be moved to the new centre.
Worries were raised about the effect it would have on the elderly patients and a 26-name petition and three letters were sent to the district council objecting to the suggested closure.
But the Aelfgar Surgery recently withdrew its support for the project and is now expected to remain open.
As a result, Cannock Chase Primary Care Trust had to re-assess the scheme and decided to press ahead.
Councillors will visit the site before debating the issue on Wednesday and have been advised by council officers to grant permission for the two and three-storey development.
A report to the district council's planning control committee said various services currently provided by Hillsprings Clinic, in a mobile building, and the Aelfgar Surgery could be relocated to the new centre to deliver the one stop shop.
It added the PCT has confirmed the application site, next to Western Springs Primary School, was the only available location capable of supporting all the required facilities.
