The first permanent ice skating rink to open in Cannock will be ready for skaters just after Christmas, it has been revealed.

Construction workers are expected to start on site in the next couple of weeks and it is hoped the venue will throw open its doors in early January.

Operators The Ice Rink Company today revealed talks were taking place with the English Ice Hockey Association over the possibility of the £1 million rink being used for seminars and coaching.

Managing director Mark Johnson, who has worked in the ice rink industry for 16 years, said the development in units at Lakeside Plaza, off Walkmill Lane in Bridgtown, would cater for 120-150 people at any one time.

It will create up to 20 jobs, with recruitment starting in December.

Mr Johnson said: "What we are going to provide is a fine skating rink for the community of Cannock.

He added: "I'm hoping this will be the first of many more, maybe eventually a bigger one for the area."

He said it was rare for an existing building to be turned into such a facility but he was attracted by the fact Cannock did not have a rink, had a good location next to the M6 Toll and he was drawn by the enthusiasm of millionaire developer Fred Pritchard.

"He wants to invest back into the people of Cannock and his drive and determination ticked all the right boxes with me," said Mr Johnson.

Mr Pritchard, chairman and chief executive of Pritchard Holdings Plc, said: "This is an exciting time for Cannock and people should make sure they use the facility, then they won't lose it."
