Ellie McDonnell, 14, from Swindon, near Dudley, rushed to the aid of the two 84-year-olds after their car collided with a lorry outside her father's home in Leeds.

Ellie, a pupil at Edgecliffe School, Kinver, came out of her father's house to investigate a loud bang and was called to help by a passing off-duty paramedic.

She leaned through the back window of the car to hold the woman's neck while firefighters cut off the roof to release the couple. Now she is in line for an award for her heroics after being praised by firefighters.

Ellie, who lives with her mother Shirley McDonnell in Swindon, was visiting her father Mark McDonnell. Mrs McDonnell said: "I'm absolutely over the moon with Ellie at the moment, just so proud."

The elderly couple, of Cookridge, Leeds, are recovering well in hospital following the crash which happened on September 10.
