Historic inn may face bulldozer
The future of a Rugeley pub twice spared the bulldozer could be in jeopardy after plans to build 48 apartments behind the building were rejected.
The plans would have secured the future of The Vine Inn, off Sheep Fair, as three blocks of 16 apartments would have been built behind the 600-year-old pub.
The pub has twice been under threat but was saved from closure after residents fought to save it.
Cannock Chase Council's planning control committee last night voted to refuse the apartments which would have been built on the car park
They supported seven residents who sent letters of objection to the authority and said the scheme would have been an over development of the site.
Objectors also claimed the development would be out of character with the area, that drainage and sewerage was likely to be inadequate and that the development would undermine residents' peaceful enjoyment of their properties.
Some said there would be a negative impact on wildlife and vegetation.
The site lies in the Sheepfair/Bow Street Conservation Area.
The scheme was aimed at the elderly independent person and the applicant had highlighted a shortage of such purpose-built accommodation in Rugeley.
Pub landlord Oliver Westwood said The Vine was an historic business at the centre of the community which should be preserved.
