Dogs come in all shapes and sizes - the Royal Kennel Club (formerly the UK Kennel Club) recognises 221 different pedigree dogs, from Affenpinscher to Yorkshire Terrier (there are sadly no dog breeds starting with the letter ‘z’!).
Then there are all manner of crossbreeds, from so-called ‘designer dogs’ to lovable mongrels.
Each has its own list of positive and negative attributes, and it’s important to take plenty of time to think about what breed will fit into your lifestyle the best - for instance a smaller dog if you live in a flat, or a hypoallergenic dog if the mere mention of dog hair makes you think about sneezing.
There is even scientific research to guide you, in particular psychologist Stanley Coren’s groundbreaking book The Intelligence of Dogs.
And if you have young children - or are planning a family - then there are certain breeds that should top your list.
These are dogs that tend to be calm, gentle, loving and patient - that are unlikely to snap and enjoy playing games and snuggling with their young human siblings.
Here are 12 breeds that fit the bill perfectly and should become firm friends with kids.

3. Golden Retriever
What is true of the Labrador is usually also true of its close cousin the gregarious Golden Retriever. Another gundog famed for its placid nature, intelligence and good humour, the Golden Retriever is a perfect family pooch. | AFP via Getty Images

4. Pug
Pugs are known to have a special affinity with children and are likely to become best buddies with the youngest member of the family within a wag of a tail. They are eager to please, easy to train, and very loving. | AFP via Getty Images
