Facelifted camper has gained a series of new features.

Volkswagen’s facelifted California has gone on sale.

Priced from £54,065 excluding VAT, the revised Camper gains an updated front-end design with larger LED headlights than before, differentiating this model from its predecessor, while new power-latching sliding doors and tailgate help boost accessibility.

Inside, there’s a new 12.9-inch infotainment system which is the main access point for media and navigation functions, while a 10-inch digital cockpit ahead of the driver gives clear information.

The California also gets a control centre that lets you programme various settings, including internal temperature, while checking water and battery levels.

On the new eHybrid 4Motion model, the van’s on-board battery supply can be used to electrically cool, ventilate or heat the interior for up to eight hours without the need for a mains hook-up. It could be a good option for those who want to take their California off-grid.

Those who want to travel further afield can now specify optional fitted solar panels, too, which form part of the off-grid package. As well as the panels, it brings two batteries which provide 40 per cent more usable capacity than in the standard van, allowing adventurers to stay out and about for longer.

Volkswagen has also introduced more high-quality materials to the California, while the van’s smartphone charging options have been upgraded via a 25-watt wireless charging pad or a high-speed 60-watt USB-C point.

Updated assistance systems are now included, too, with a new lane assist system able to change lanes on motorways autonomously. Traffic light recognition is now fitted to the California as standard, as is a revised emergency assist which can guide the van to the hard shoulder or outermost lane if it detects that the driver is suffering from a medical emergency.
