Mazda’s CX-5 gains Google Gemini AI assistance

Built-in system provides more complex responses.
Mazda has integrated Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence system into its CX-5 SUV for the first time.
Now available on CX-5 models with Google built-in, the Gemini technology aims to bring a more intelligent voice assistant to the brand’s popular family car.
With it, drivers can search for destinations ‘which match their preferences, mood or purpose’, according to Mazda, rather than needing a specific place in mind. For instance, a driver can ask Gemini to find them a cafe nearby with outdoor seating and then narrow down their search through further questions.

Drivers can even ask Gemini to choose some music which matches their mood, playing audio via Spotify, YouTube Music and Amazon Music.
The Gemini assistant can also read incoming messages out loud and then draft, refine and send replies completely via voice controls. Mazda says that messaging services such as WhatsApp and Messenger can be used entirely hands-free as well, but via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The new Gemini assistant is being rolled out as an over-the-air update and just needs users to be signed into their Google account on the car’s main screen to activate it.
The latest Mazda CX-5 was launched earlier in the year and arrived with a fully Google-based infotainment system, bringing features such as Maps equipped as standard and native to the car’s main screen.
Prices for the new CX-5 start from £31,550, with just a single engine – a 2.5-litre four-cylinder mild-hybrid – available for now.
