I need to start thinking about what to get you for Christmas," stated my other half.

Ahhhh, I thought how lovely of him, surprises!

"What do you want?" he quizzed. "Write me a list."

Ordinarily I love a list. Massive fan, ask anyone, but on this occasion the 'L' word swiftly removed all the romance.

It's the annual dilemma faced by many men: what to get the other half for Christmas?

DO have an essentials list – There are some things that will always go down well. Perfume, pyjamas, socks and a handbag or shoes.

DO add surprises – This requires thought but it must be something she's not expecting.

DON'T panic or get stressed – The internet can be a lifesaver. Do your research and order online.

DO look out for discounts – Visit voucher websites and see if there are any offers available in the shops you'll be buying from.

DON'T rush a purchase – If you're unsure it's probably best not to buy it.

DO get gift receipts – Just in case the worst happens and it has to be returned to the shop.

DO try your best – It doesn't take much effort and a little bit of thought can go a long way.

So I wrote my list. Slipping in subtle hints such as 'diamond' between my favourite perfume and pyjamas along with 'ring, size J' just after new boots.

On one hand at least I'll get exactly what I want, but on the other I'm really making it far too easy for him!

I'm sure plenty of men are in the same situation. And perhaps some women struggle to find that perfect present for their beloved too.

A lot of men will admit to panic buying at the last minute, going with things they get year in, year out and perhaps some unimaginative gifts such as saucy undies that are more for them than us. Maybe some women fit into that category too!

Let's face it, no one wants to disappoint on the big day.

In order to get it right this is not something that can be left until Christmas Eve. This is weeks, even months in the making.

To avoid festive fights, here at Woman we've got the perfect gift buying guide for guys and gals so they can get it right this season. Ladies, you might want to leave this page on the coffee table to catch his eye.

LISTEN

If he/she mentions anything they desire make a note of it. Pick up hints when you're out shopping especially if your other half lingers by a particular item.

OBSERVE

Check the bathroom for their favourite products, perfumes, aftershaves, shower gels, creams and make-up – there's loads of things that they may need to stock up on. Or buy them a luxurious treat you'll know they'll love.

CHECK

Have a sneaky peek in the wardrobe to check sizes. It's best to get it right and always check both tops and bottoms as they can differ. Also look at labels to see their favourite shops so you know where to head to.

LIST

Make one for yourself so you can get organised and tick off the things you've got. It may also help you budget so you don't overspend.

SHOP

Head to the stores early. It'll be quieter and you're less likely to get stressed by all the crowds later in the day. Or if you can't face the shops, order online. It may be quicker if you're struggling for time.

BAGS

Take a rucksack or other bags. If you're on a mission and are going into loads of shops that 5p charge could start adding up. If you take your own, you can put all your purchases in it and reduce the risk of losing anything too.

DISCOUNTS

Look out for offers but don't be seduced by them. If it's what you're after and there's money off, great. But if you're buying because it's cheap then it may remain unused in a cupboard.

REMEMBER

You're buying the gift for your partner NOT for yourself. It's about making them happy not you!
