We speak with Jason Donovan ahead of Wolverhampton show about the hits, being famous as a young man and Doin' Fine nowadays
Jason Donovan was one of the heart throbs of the 1980s and early 90s, and the multi-million-selling artist and a star of one of the most popular TV soaps is coming to Wolverhampton.
Jason Donovan has been part of the entertainment industry and a feature in people's lives since the 1980s, finding fame in his role as Scott Robinson on Neighbours, the Australian soap opera that was televised regularly in the UK.
Since then, it has been a rollercoaster of a career and life for the now-57-year-old, which began with a meteoric rise to fame in the late '80s, with his debut single “Nothing Can Divide Us” shooting to number 5 in the UK charts, quickly followed by the iconic duet with Kylie Minogue, “Especially For You”, which topped the charts for 14 weeks and became an instant classic.
His first solo UK number one, “Too Many Broken Hearts”, and his multi-platinum debut album Ten Good Reasons solidified his status as one of the era’s standout pop stars.
The momentum continued through 1990 with the release of his second album, Between The Lines and a stream of hit singles, including “Hang On To Your Love,” “Another Night,” “Rhythm Of The Rain” and “I’m Doin’ Fine." and he embarked on his Doin’ Fine 90 tour, a series of sold-out performances still fondly remembered by fans.
Alongside his pop success, Jason has built an impressive reputation in musical theatre, with his West End breakthrough coming in 1991 with the lead role in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, followed by starring roles in productions including The Rocky Horror Show, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Priscilla, The Sound of Music, Annie Get Your Gun, Jeff Wayne’s The War Of The Worlds, The King’s Speech and Grease.
Through the successful times as a chart-topping artist to struggles through addiction in the late-90s and a career resurgence in the 2000s, Jason has remained in the public eye and has kept a legion of loyal fans, as well as picking up new ones as they discovered his music.

This resurgence has continued with his most recent tour "Doin’ Fine 25", which saw him perform to more than 40,000 fans across the UK and Ireland, and sees him return to stages nationwide in 2026 with Doin’ Fine Encore, including the Wulfrun Hall in Wolverhampton on February 27.
Ahead of his appearance in Wolverhampton, he said it was nice to be able to tour again as it's not something he does very often, but he said he felt it was the right time to hit the road again.
He said: "I did the tour last year, which was celebration of 30 to 35 years of live work and was a real success and I've loved it as I don't tour a lot as Jason as it takes a lot of time and it's expensive to tour.
"I have an audience out there who want to see the shows, but you've got to deliver quality and that takes time, so I think we delivered quality and got to the end of it and I thought that maybe we should be doing some more dates in the future.
"It's the same show, but we have just picked different towns to go to and it's a celebration of the songs and the theatre and it's a bit of nostalgia, some anecdotes thrown in and even a clip of my dad in the 1950s singing a song, which I've managed to AI track in so that I'm singing along with him, so it's all about the dream."
