‘I held 20p chip day at my Birmingham chip shop and had queues around the block’
A video shows large queues of schoolchildren at a Birmingham fish and chip shop for its special 20p chip day.
A Birmingham fish and chip shop has been flogging chips for just 20p, to give kids the joy of 1980s prices.
Nassar Iqbal has run the Hot Spot chippy in Billesley for 22 years. But on Wednesday (January 14) he went back to the 1980s when he launched a special 20p chip day for schoolchildren. Hundreds of kids queued around the block to get their hands on the ‘cheap as chips’ snack which usually costs £1.50 for a cone.

Nassar - better known as ‘Uncle Nas’ - launched the 20p offer for anyone in school uniform between 3pm and 5pm.
He regularly posts videos on social media and has attracted almost 30,000 followers on TikTok.

He said: "The kids that follow us on TikTok have absolutely no idea that chips back in the day used to cost just 20p. In the '80s, we'd be sneaking out of school at lunchtimes and go to the chippy to get some 20p chips with extra salt and vinegar and just enjoy them. I wanted to bring that experience back for the modern generation.”
Sadly Nassar was forced to limit the offer and says UK chippies face a struggle to survive with rocketing costs.
He said: "The cost of potatoes, oil and gas have really gone up and cod prices are just ridiculous.
“The traditional chippy is just not trendy any more, young people want smash burgers and peri peri chicken. Chips are typically a grown-up thing now and that is why I wanted to show youngsters what they are missing out on."
