This quiet market town is the gateway to one of the West Midlands most scenic spots

This quaint town offers scenic riverside walks, much-loved food and drink spots and excellent independent shopping.

Britain's longest river is the River Severn, which spans about 220 miles, all the way from the Welsh mountains through to the Bristol channel.

One of the most beautiful parts about this river is that it flows into key West Midlands areas, including plenty of Shropshire and Worcestershire towns and villages. 

An underrated market town in the West Midlands, that's a fabulous place to travel to for riverside walks and rich history is none other than the town of Bewdley.

The quaint town has a population of 9,267 (according to the latest census) and is a gateway to scenic West Midlands beauty spots which include, the Malvern Hills, the Shropshire Hills and it is not too far away from the Cotswolds. 

The town is only a 46 minute drive away from Wolverhampton, and you can reach there via A449, according to Google Maps.

Once you reach Bewdley, especially on a lovely spring day, you will find that there is plenty to keep you entertained and interested. 

Severn Valley Railway, is an extremely popular railway attraction that passes through Shropshire and Worcestershire. Bewdley is one such place, where visitors can enjoy this 16-mile long heritage railway.

The line was a fixture for those who lived through the industrial age, as it was first opened in 1862, and it ran for 101 years before closing though it re-opened in 1970 and has been in operation ever since. This journey is perfect for anyone interested in locomotives.

For walkers, Bewdley is nice to head out to if you're looking for a diverse range of walks that include scenic views of the River Severn as well as the Severn Valley Railway, they include calming riverside walks to treks to the Wyre Forest

For those who are keen shoppers, the location offers a varied shopping experience, Load Street is often lauded for its large concentration of independent boutiques shops, that many locals enjoy traditional specialty stores against a historic Georgian backdrop.  

In November 2024, one fish and chip spot called Merchants located on Load Street went viral after staff member Destiny Harrold became widely known on TikTok as the 'chip shop diva'. Merchants currently has 639.8k followers on TikTok (March 2026), and still attracts visitors from all over the country.

La Fragancia is another highly-rated fragrance shop on the street, with a five-star Google review rating based on 33 reviews. One reviewer stated that it's on of the "best" fragrance shops in the country. They wrote, "La Fragancia in Bewdley is one of the best independent niche perfume shops in the UK". 

Similarly, The Green Cobbler, is also a highly-rated shoe repair shop located on the street. 

In terms of food and drink, Bewdley is something of a hidden West Midlands gem, these range from much-loved historic pubs and cool cafes and renowned independent dining places. Locations such as The Mug House Inn & Restaurant and Mulberry Restaurant have been consistently rank as the top choices for dining in the town.
