But the performance was still a hit with the Government's Chief Whip who revealed that often in politics, life really does imitate art.

The MP watched Pattingham Drama Group's play based on the hit BBC sitcom of the same name, which charts the trials and tribulations of Jim Hacker during his tenure in Number 10.

And Mr Williamson, who loaned out his ministerial red box for one scene, said there were more than a few similarities in the play to the current political landscape.

"It was a relief to see that the current Government has kept some continuity in the plot of the play," a grinning Mr Williamson said. "It is so great to see a community come together to put on an amazing show and I really look forward to seeing their next production."

In the production, former Minister for Administrative Affairs Hacker is tasked with dealing with rows over Europe and party infighting after becoming Prime Minister.

After the show completed its four-day run at Pattingham Village Hall, Mr Williamson chatted with cast members and congratulated them on their performances.

The play, written by Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn, was the winner of the What's On Stage best new comedy award in 2011 and has been presented up and down the country since.

Pattingham Drama Group is due to hit the stage again next May for a performance of Peter Shaffer's satire Lettice & Lovage.
