Festive Gift Fair, NEC Birmingham - review
The NEC Christmas Gift Fair, for most, marks the start of Christmas.

Though only in mid-November, the famous four-day event like the starting pistol before the race begins to Santa's big day.
Christmas music plays across the venue for an extra festive touch - not that you need one here! And even the red carpet makes you feel you've landed in the home of Santa.

If you've never been, think tree decorations, Christmas wear, festive food and all things in-between. The range of goods on offer is quite extraordinary - from your must-have fairy lights, baubles, tinsel and even trees to your more unusual gifts such as Arabian-inspired homeware, memberships for the National Trust, Help for Heroes charity jumpers and faux fur cover-ups.
There also a huge crafts section filled with homemade decorations, ribbons and trinkets, along with jewellery, clothes and gift stalls.
Then of course there's the food - whisky to warm the heart, cheese to please everyone and mouth-watering chocolate fountains. Mulled wine is available from the food area in the centre of the venue, but there was big queue when we were there. It would have been nice to have a few more stalls selling the stuff, but on the upside you can bring your own food and drink to keep you going.
A few points to note - the venue does get packed quite quickly. We arrived at 11am on Sunday and the isles were bustling with visitors. It can deter some, but there are quieter patches which you'll find as you walk around. You can either get there early or be prepared for the crowds. Also it gets hot, so either dress lightly or bring bags to pop jackets in. And be prepared to pay an extra £12 for parking if travelling by car on top of your NEC tickets and whatever you spend on the day. Or you can get the train into Birmingham International.
But for Christmas shopping inspiration or if you just want to get in the spirit, the Festive Gift Fair is a good place to start.
