Essington Bowls Club, part of Essington Working Men's Club, on High Hill, Essington, won £465.17 as part of the Cash For Your Community awards 2015.

The awards, run by the Express & Star and HomeServe saw £35,000 given out to 103 groups last year.

The bowls club used the money to pay towards a brand new roof for their club, that was previously leaking, cracked and made of asbestos. Club secretary John Elsmore, aged 70, who has been in the role for 50 years said: "We applied in around June last year and found out we'd won in the September. All the members got together to collect the coupons from the Express & Star. We managed to collect just over 4,000 of them altogether. Now we have a completely new felt roof with wooden underlay, so it can even be walked on."

The club also received an additional £200 towards the cost of the roof from the parish council.

The club has also made various other improvements and renovations. Mr Elsmore said: "We've painted the railings, added a new gate and even painted the walls around the side of the bowling green.

"None of this would be possible without the Express & Star and we're ever so grateful for what you have done."
