A slight shrug of the shoulder or lazy flex of the leg were all that were needed to spark screams of approval from an army of adoring female fans.

The man was so cool he was three songs into the show before he needed to take off his thigh length Crombie-style overcoat.

But you don't make more than 5,000 concert performances while writing and recording 23 top 30 hits in the UK alone and selling over 40 million records worldwide without knowing what the punters want. The once dark curly hair is grey nowadays but the distinctive catch-at-the-back-of-the-throat emotion-packed voice is as good as ever.

It took the audience on a stomp down memory lane backed by a tight four-strong band.

Rock On, Lamplight, Gonna Make You A Star, Me and My Girl (Night-Clubbing) and A Winter's Tale all featured against a backcloth of clips from his movies.

The fans excitedly roared their agreement when Essex declared: "It's good to be back on the road. I am enjoying it."

In a career achieving success in all areas of entertainment on stage and recording – at 65 he still leaves them shouting for more.
