Engelbert Humperdinck

Symphony Hall, Birmingham

Concert review by Gary Sanders

With a video introduction by Eddie Izzard you knew this was going to be night of surprises and boy, did we get those.

Engelbert Humperdinck, the classic crooner who's in his 44th year in showbiz, delivered a great evening's entertainment.

The sprightly 75-year-old took us on a journey through his extensive back catalogue but also threw in some unexpected covers from the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Bryan Adams, The Police and an aptly titled Smooth by Santana.

Thoroughly enjoying his time on stage, he mused his way through old anecdotes.

Backed by a multi-talented 10 piece band he performed some of his best known ballads with the crowd swaying and singing along to his every word with The Last Waltz being a particular highlight.
