Concert review by Jerald Smith

The winner of this year's Dudley International Piano Competition, Qiaojing Dai, was the unanimous choice of both audience and jury.

There is no doubting her excellent musical pedigree. Born in China the 21-year- old graduated with one of th highest-ever marks from the Royal Academy of Music last year.

Her choice of concerto, the Chopin No 2, does not have much audience appeal, but it does give the soloist a tremendous opportunity to display virtuoso skills.

With a supportive accompaniment coming from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, under conductor Michael Seal, the soloist caught the drama of the work in the outer movements as well as the lyricism of the central Larghetto.
