Wolverhampton audiences can share in a top London theatre production when the National Theatre's production of Checkov's The Cherry Orchard is screened live in High Definition at the Light House cinema in the city.

The Light House is joining 400 other cinemas around the world to present a special National Theatre Live broadcast of the production, which stars Zoë Wanamaker.

The Cherry Orchard is showing at Light House on Thursday, June 30, at 6.45pm. Tickets cost £12 (£11 conc). The screening will run for three hours, including pre-show and interval.

This spirited new version of Chekhov's last play reunites director Howard Davies with Andrew Upton following their acclaimed productions of Philistines and The White Guard.

The Cherry Orchard captures a poignant moment in Russia's history as the country rolls inexorably towards 1917. Set at the very start of twentieth century Russia, the play begins with Madame Ranyevskaya returning almost bankrupt after ten years abroad.

Luxuriating in her fading moneyed world and regardless of the increasingly hostile forces outside, she and her brother snub the lucrative scheme of Lopakhin, a peasant turned entrepreneur, to save the family estate. In so doing, they put up their lives to auction and seal the fate of their beloved orchard.

Zoë Wanamaker's extensive television work includes My Family, Poirot, Dr Who, Miss Marple, Gormenghast and Love Hurts and films include Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and My Week with Marilyn.

Broadcasts also feature interviews with artists and behind-the-scenes footage, allowing audiences to share in the acclaimed work the National Theatre produces at the South Bank in London.

Zoë Wanamaker plays Ranyevskaya; the cast also includes Claudie Blakley (as Varya), Mark Bonnar (Trofimov), Pip Carter (Yepihodov), Kenneth Cranham (Firs), Conleth Hill (Lopakhin), Gerald Kyd (Yasha), James Laurenson (Gaev), Tim McMullan (Simyonov-Pischik), Emily Taaffe (Dunyasha), Charity Wakefield (Anya) and Sarah Woodward (Charlotta).

National Theatre Live performances are broadcast in High Definition to almost 400 cinemas around the world, live in Europe and some US cities, and time-delayed in countries further afield.

There are over 100 venues in the UK alongside venues in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Scandinavia and Europe. The performances at the National are nominated in advance to allow cameras greater freedom in the auditorium.
