The 28-year-old defensive midfielder inked a four-year deal, after completing a move from Spanish side Elche in a deal believed to be worth £4.7m.

He has 48 caps for his national side including four in Brazil as Colombia reached the quarter-finals.

"Carlos is a very experienced professional who played a prominent role in a Colombian team which captured everyone's imagination," said Lambert.

"He's a great coup for Villa. His role will be a really important one for the team. We've beaten other teams to bring him here to Villa and I'm delighted."
