In a column nine years ago, writes Peter Rhodes, I suggested that as Labour was kept in power largely by Scottish Labour MPs and the vast majority of Tory voters live in England, it might be an idea for the Conservatives to face facts and change their name to the England Party.

Now, the would-be leader of the Conservative Party in Scotland, Murdo Fraser, is calling for a name change to distance Scottish Tories from "the party of England."

Not before time.

With only one Tory MP elected in the whole of Scotland, it seems pointless for David Cameron to kid himself that Scotland is at all interested in Toryism.

It is time for a strategic Tory withdrawal to a line south of Carlisle.

Scotland will cope without the Conservatives and the Conservatives will do very nicely without Scotland.
