An infinity of waiting for broadband

You might assume, from all those BT ads showing fiery objects falling on our homes, that switching to BT Infinity broadband is dead easy, writes Peter Rhodes.

You might assume, from all those BT ads showing fiery objects falling on our homes, that switching to BT Infinity broadband is dead easy, writes Peter Rhodes.

Not exactly. You can't move from your current internet provider until they give you the essential MAC code.

The catch? First you have to contact them.

I spent the weekend trying to get through to my provider, only to hear a recorded message that all the lines were engaged. I tried the customer-service (euphemism) number which referred me to another number which was also engaged.

Finally, I went online and discovered, in one of the many chatrooms complaining about the MAC procedure, that my provider has a full-time cancellations department with its own (apparently secret) phone number.

A single call produced the MAC code and BT Infinity's blazing space debris should be hurtling through my roof any day now.
