I still blush at the memory of telling a boating tale in a canalside pub nearly 40 years ago.

What I intended to explain, shouting to a pal over the hubbub in a crowded bar, was that our narrowboat nearly came to grief in a lock because "we got the front caught!"

It didn't quite come out like that. The whole bar fell horribly silent.

A fraught moment, indeed.
