This week's report condemning the M6 Toll as a failure inevitably leads to speculation about the 27-mile toll road being taken over by the Government and made toll-free, writes Peter Rhodes.

As an occasional user, I am in two minds. On the one hand, it would be nice to save a fiver.

On the other, the Toll services are possibly the best in the country, being relatively free of football supporters, screaming kids and the usual service-station riff-raff.
