Dudley-based mobility aid manufacturer acquires US-headquartered leading high-performance wheels brand

California-based Spinergy has become a trusted brand for active wheelchair users and elite athletes - and the deal will support its next phase of growth

Leading global mobility aid manufacturer Sunrise Medical, based in Brierley Hill, has announced the acquisition of Spinergy, Inc. - the world’s leading brand of high-performance wheels for active manual wheelchairs.

The deal will support Spinergy’s next phase of growth as an independent premium component supplier within the Sunrise Medical Group.

California-headquartered Spinergy has earned the trust of active wheelchair users and elite athletes over more than three decades, with its wheels offered by leading wheelchair manufacturers around the world. Its proprietary PBO fiber-spoke technology combines strength and low weight with vibration absorption, helping to soften the impact of uneven surfaces.

The technology, which is used for everyday mobility through to Paralympic races, has made Spinergy a benchmark for performance and a brand riders ask for by name - with more than 90 per cent of world-class athletes choosing Spinergy wheels for their primary sport chairs.

Spinergy, which was founded in 1990 and has its headquarters in San Marcos, California, with manufacturing operations in Tijuana, Mexico, will continue to operate independently within the Sunrise Medical Group, retaining its brand and its entire organisation and team. Its long-standing relationships with wheelchair manufacturers, distributors and users will remain at the heart of the business, with a continued commitment to serving partners across the mobility industry.

Sunrise Medical, based on Thorns Road, Quarry Bank, will support Spinergy’s growth through further product development, enhanced customer support and broader market reach. The shared ambition is to build on Spinergy’s expertise in performance wheels and bespoke carbon fiber design and manufacturing, bringing new innovations and greater choice to riders worldwide.

Marty Connolly, president of Spinergy, said: “I have devoted more than 30 years to building Spinergy alongside a team that shares my passion for making exceptional products. We have earned the trust of riders who do not compromise on their equipment and the partners who build around our components. With Sunrise Medical’s support, we can take that work further while staying true to our brand, our people and our commitments to customers. I am excited about what we can achieve together.”
