Demand has been soaring in China, Brazil and America for its luxury saloons and 4x4s, and April saw another set of record figures.

Parent company Tata Motors was announcing the figures in India today, and early indications are that pre-tax profits will top £1.6billion – up around £100 million on last year.

JLR was also expected to say that sales of its cars have risen by 15 per cent to more than 370,000. Although it is a slower increase than last year's 30 per cent rise, analysts are expecting sales to accelerate in the coming year.

Meanwhile, work is progressing rapidly on the £500m engine factory under construction on the border of Wolverhampton and South Staffordshire.

Within the next couple of months, the first production equipment is expected to be moved into the factory on the i54 site.
