A Wednesbury-based business that specialises in converting vehicles for use by people in wheelchairs and is in line for a £450,000 investment has made 15 people redundant as it cuts costs, it has emerged.

The jobs have gone at Sirus Automotive, which is based in Britannia Park, Trident Drive. The company has said it needs to trim budgets to safeguard the future of the business.

One member of staff, who did not want to be named, said: "The letter says that unfortuately I am one of the workers whose employment has been terminated.

"The letter said the redundancy situation was unavoidable and needs to cut costs to safeguard the future of the business. I am disappointed. I love my job. I used to love doing my job."

James Fraser, managing director of Sirus Automotive, confirmed the job losses.

He said: "Sadly, 15 redundancies have been made in order to secure the short-term future of the company during the current economic climate. The investment recently announced is intended to support the ongoing strategy."

Earlier this month it was revealed the company had secured funding of £400,000 from UK Steel Enterprise and £50,000 from Black Country Reinvestment Society to help develop new products.
