All seven jobs were axed today at a struggling joinery firm in South Staffordshire.

Emco Joinery Ltd, based in Bognop Road, Essington, has made its entire workforce redundant after a director revealed that the economic downturn had hit profits.

When asked about the future of the company, the director, who did not want to be named, added: "That is to be confirmed soon."

Father-of-four Gordon Simpson, aged 34, from Wednesfield, is one of the workers left out of a job.

His wife Clare, a housewife, said today that her husband had worked for the firm for almost two years having been made redundant from his previous employers, Bilston's Spec Joinery Ltd, in 2009.

"Things have been bad with Emco since Easter but we were under the impression things had started to pick up a little," she said.

Mrs Simpson said her husband had recently been on reduced hours, working four days a week instead of five.

"It is a small company and has obviously been hit hard," she added.
