A forging firm which once employed more than 1,000 workers has closed its Black Country operation after falling victim to the recession.

Cerro EMS Ltd, which makes metal pressed goods, is the country's last remaining non-ferrous forgers.

It was based at Goscote Lane, Goscote, Walsall, on a seven-acre site for more than 50 years.

After a low order book, dropping to a two-day working week, and axing 36 jobs, the firm closed the factory and has now moved the remaining 30 shop floor workers and office staff to its main plant at Liverpool Street, in Birmingham.

Operations director Carl Edwards worked at Goscote for 43 years. "It is terrible to see it go, but the decision had to be made. In its heyday in the 1960s more than 1,000 people worked there."
