September 2 marked the day chairman Alan Nuttall started the company in 1966 with just £137 in his garage on his wife Jacqueline's birthday.

Nuttall's, which has its main manufacturing base in Hall Street, Dudley, has grown to employ 600 across its sites which have a million square feet of manufacturing, engineering and office space.

The company, which has its head office in Hinckley, Leicestershire, has many of the UK's top retail and hospitality brands amongst its customers.

Mr Nuttall, aged 74, said he was incredibly proud of the business.

"There have been enormous changes within the industry over the years and many hurdles to overcome, but we have adapted and grown with these challenges to become leaders in what we do. I'm incredibly proud to be celebrating the first 50 years and look forward to the next chapter in our history."

The company has seen growth of 35 per cent in the last decade and offers a wide range of services, including interior fit-out, design and build, signage and refrigeration and display equipment for retail, commercial, hospitality, leisure, foodservice and public sectors.

Nuttall's client portfolio includes airports and universities across the UK through to many premium and high street brands installed across the globe.

One of the company's proudest achievements was becoming an employee-owned partnership last year, with every employee becoming a partner – from skilled joiners, experienced sheet metal engineers, project managers and designers to support team staff – all now receiving a share of profits.

Mr Nuttall revolutionised the way fruit and veg was sold by creating the first self-serve counter system that is still used by supermarkets today.

Nuttall's celebrated its first 50 years with a party for staff and families and is holding a charity night on October 27 at the National Motorcycle Museum, Solihull, at which Dudley-born comedian Sir Lenny Henry will be the after dinner speaker.

Money raised will go to the Alzheimer's Society and Cancer Research UK.
