The affordable housing contractor is currently working with Sandwell Council as part of a framework of three contractors to deliver £50m property improvements to over 6,000 homes.

Wates selected 15 local hopefuls to take part in its Building Futures programme; a national scheme designed to boost job prospects with on-the-job training and the experience of life on a live construction site.

The two-week training programme saw the candidates gain a variety of qualifications and practical skills including carpentry, tiling and plumbing.

The candidates were even able to put their new painting and decorating skills to the test, helping to paint the office of local social enterprise, Rising Stars Cleaning.

Wates says its delivery of the scheme brings with it a commitment to the creation of tangible training and employment opportunities for the people of Sandwell. All participants are offered the opportunity to be interviewed by members of Wates' supply chain.

All those taking part were rewarded for their efforts with CSCS accreditation plus asbestos awareness, safety and employability skills training as a means of securing access to future training and experience on building sites. Wates delivered the programme in partnership with its national delivery partners Ixion Holdings and Skill Centre.

Stewart Reid, business director of Wates Living Space, said: "We are constantly looking for ways to go beyond building and invest in the communities in which we work. Our Building Futures programme enables us to do just that – helping local residents gain employment.

"I am so pleased that we have been able to deliver this innovative training course and hope that it makes a real difference to the lives of these Sandwell residents. They've done a remarkable job on the paintwork of Rising Stars and I hope that this leads to fruitful careers."

Sandwell's cabinet member for jobs and economy, Councillor Ian Jones said: "This is a great opportunity for young people looking to kick-start their working life.

"Young people often find they can't get a job without work experience and can't get experience without a job. This boost will give them the skills, experience and confidence to succeed. I wish them every success."

Since completing the Building Futures programme in Sandwell, two of the candidates have already secured jobs.

Wates Living Space is working with partners VINCI Facilities and Lovell Partnerships to deliver the Sandwell Homes property improvements.
