Canal cordon in place following discovery of 'body in the water' in Wolverhampton

A cordon has been put into place on a stretch of canal system this morning following the discovery of a 'body in the water' in Wolverhampton.

According to a West Midlands Police officer from the scene, officers were called to the canal towpath between Lichfield Road and Broad Lane North, following reports of a body being in the canal system.

Two police cars were spotted sitting stationary on blue lights on Lichfield Road at around 8.30am this morning, with officers standing near the entrance gate of the towpath.

A cordon is reported to be in place between the two roads.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said:  "We were called to reports of a man's body in a canal off Broad Lane, Wednesfield at just after 7am today (Sat).Sadly he was confirmed dead at the scene and we are working to identify him and inform next of kin. His death is currently being treated as non-suspicious."
