Benik Afobe scored the only goal in the 25th minute, in a game where the visitors were on the back-foot for much of the match.

Both sides had efforts disallowed for offside - Afobe and Kim Bo-Kyung - but former Albion goalkeeper Scott Carson twice denied Kenny Jackett's side.

He acted in the second half by thwarting clean-through Nouha Dicko against his old club and Dave Edwards' header on the break.

Wolves go into their final match of the season at home to Millwall next Saturday needing to make up the two-point gap to sixth-placed Derby, who came from 2-0 down to draw 3-3 at Millwall.

The Rams must also lose at home to Reading for Wolves - who also need to better the result of Brentford - to get into the play-offs.

Wigan need to win their last game at Brentford and hope Rotherham, who have two matches left, and Millwall lose to stay up.
