The Baggies struck twice in two late minutes through Gareth McAuley and Berahino to settle a Hawthorns thriller in their favour, after Brown Ideye had scored his first goal for the club.

And Irvine, who has claimed two wins in four days to ease the pressure on himself, said: "I am delighted to be in the last 16 and now I want to be in the last eight.

"I have felt things have been getting better in recent weeks because we've been getting more players to the level they need to be, so last night was a fantastic exercise from that point of view.

"There were so many positives to come out of it. For 40 minutes we were the better game and Hull scored with their first attempt at goal, which was self-inflicted.

"I was bitterly disappointed to go in at 1-1 and, when we conceded early in the second-half, it was even more difficult but we kept on creating chances and in the end we got the two goals."

The Baggies booked a place in the last 16 thanks when Berahino pounced for the winner on 88 minutes just a minute after Gareth McAuley had fired them level.

They had trailed 2-1 against the run of play when Tom Ince and Robbie Brady scored either of half-time for Hull.

That came after club-record signing Ideye had fired the Baggies ahead on 15 minutes, before limping off injured just six minutes later after being caught by a challenge by David Meyler as he netted.

Irvine said: "He rocked his ankle scoring the goal so it was a bittersweet moment for him.

"On one hand he's scored his first goal but on the other he's had to come off, but I think he'll be more happy than disappointed to have got that first goal because pressure comes on strikers when they don't get that."

Meanwhile, reports in Spain have linked the Baggies with a possible January move for Rayo Vallecano striker Alberto Bueno.

The 26-year-old is out of contract next summer, sparking reports that he could be available for a reduced price in the new year.

Bueno has already scored four goals in four games this season and has begun to attract interest from a number of clubs around Europe.

But Spanish sources claim the Baggies have already registered an interest.
