Is this Dudley's finest garden?

For Netherton pensioner Donald Hall, his garden is his pride and joy.

Over the years he and his wife Barbara have won numerous awards for its beauty.

But his gardening also acts as a therapy to help him deal with his cancer.

The 77-year-old has been twice diagnosed with the disease, but now in remission, he spends nearly all his days every summer with Barbara, 75, keeping it blossoming.

"It is therapeutic for him," said Mrs Hall, an ex-florist. "With all his problems it keeps his mind occupied."

They have won both gold and silver awards from Bunches and Bows Dudley flower shop when it previously held gardening competitions.

But although the competition no longer runs, the couple still work on their garden every summer like it is a competition.

Inside the back garden of their Netherton home are beautiful plants and flowers of all shapes, sizes and colour that are pristinely cared for.

Among them is marigolds and begonias, but Donald admits his favourite is the Hydrangea, a purple coloured flower.

The couple began spending more time on the garden after Mr Hall's first cancer diagnosis in 2005, where he battled to beat tongue cancer.

He was dealt a blow when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2008, and had a 'rodent ulcer' from his temple removed last Monday for safety reasons.

But Donald and Barbara's love for gardening remains as strong as ever.

"It is the best it has ever been," said Donald.

"I do it for the love of gardening. My wife as well does it for the love as she was a florist."
