McDonald’s opens inside Asda and could be open until midnight

A new McDonald’s inside an Asda store could be set to remain open until midnight through most of the week.

The McDonald's inside the Asda Minworth supermarket in Walmley Ash Road, Sutton Coldfield, opened earlier this month.

The restaurant currently operates from 6am until 11pm Monday to Friday, 6am until 10pm on Saturday, and 10am until 4pm on Sundays.

And it is now looking to extend its licence until midnight from Monday to Friday – though one resident has raised objections to the plans, with concerns around an increase in traffic and litter in the area.

Speaking before the council’s licensing committee this week, a representative for McDonald’s said that litter would not be an issue, with a dedicated litter pick due to be established if the application is successful.

“We as a store know that for whatever reason, whether it’s McDonald’s or anything else, people just can’t be bothered to walk to a bin,” he said.

“And it’s bad for our business, it’s bad for the community for litter to be visible. So we have in our conditions the litter picks, those are our responsibility, and Asda has its own litter picks that they run at their own time.

“But we as McDonald’s will be having our litter picks. They tend to start at dawn and continue throughout the day until sunset or closing time. All our litter picks, particularly those after dark, are risk assessed as part of our insurance.

“McDonald’s also pick up all litter, whether it’s ours or Asda’s or anything else. So for example the 24 hour Asda petrol station, if they throw away any litter and it’s near, we don’t ignore that and we pick that up too.

“That’s how we operate, because we take full responsibility for any litter that’s generated in our surrounding area.”

A decision is due on the application within five working days.
