There are already plans for Manor Road, in a formal consultation phase, to upgrade existing fast (22kw) charger, which has two charge points, each being able to charge a vehicle within two hours.

There are also plans for the installation of one rapid (50kw) charger, which has a point that can charge up a vehicle within 20 minutes.

"If all goes well, we would anticipate installation being by July or August," a spokesperson for Birmingham City Council's Planning and Regeneration said.

"Charge point provision will increase within car parks as well.

"At the moment, connection applications are currently with Western Power Distribution for approval for the car parks in Sutton Coldfield."

"We anticipate installation by the end of the year. In total, Sutton town centre will have eight rapid chargers with eight charge points, and five fast chargers, with ten charge points."

Chargers are set to be installed at Anchorage Road, Duke Street and South Parade car parks.

Sutton Trinity town and city councillor David Pears said: "They are a must have.

"When you look around driveways in Sutton, there are many more electric cars than five years ago.

"If you want people to come shopping in your town you have got to have charging points.

"We need to have more of them and there aren't enough about the place.

"I'm hoping as the town develops further and the car parks change, there are more of them.

"I welcome them and we need them in the town for the future benefits of the economy."
