Driver flees after Smethwick building site crash

A driver fled from a car after crashing into a building site in Smethwick.

The red Volkswagen hatchback was left badly damaged on Grove Lane after the smash.

Its front bumper was ripped off, the front windscreen smashed while the roof and bonnet were left crumpled.

The incident took place around 7pm on Friday.

Police have not been able to confirm whether the car was reported stolen.

Ambulance crews attended as did two crews from Ladywood fire station to make the scene safe.

A fire control spokeswoman said: "We went out at 6.57pm to Grove Lane to an RTC involving one motor vehicle which had been in collision with a perimeter fence of a construction side.

"Two crews from Ladywood attended. The driver had absconded and we left it with the police.

"The firefighters left at 7.25pm."
