She had been out looking for her missing pet, when she met a man at Herald Court, off Priory Street, who offered to help.

CCTV of the suspect

After searching for the lost pet he went to her home in another street for a drink. After leaving, he returned at around 10.30pm and stole bank cards and cash before pinning her down and threatening her.

The victim managed to pull a pendant alarm and he fled. But detectives believe he returned a short time later and banged on the door, claiming to be the police.

He walked off when she did not answer.

He first encountered the woman at around 6pm on May 12, and attacked her at around 10.30pm. Detectives today released this CCTV image of the suspect.

Dc Gareth Homer said: "This is a horrific attack on an elderly woman in her own home, by someone who posed as a friend - and offered a helping hand.

"We are determined to find the man responsible and are eager to hear from anyone who thinks they may know the identity of the suspect."
