The Hill Tavern, in Kates Hill, had been repeatedly targeted by arsonists and was branded an eyesore since it closed to drinkers in 2011.

Plans had already been approved to build a convenience shop and two flats on the site.

But the plans were altered to increase the size of the planned shop.

Planning case officer Caroline Reeve, in the report, said: "The proposed development would result in the redevelopment of a previously developed site in the interests of regeneration and supporting sustainable economic development."
