Tanvir Poselay was convicted following a three-day trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court yesterday.

The 26-year-old stabbed Alexander Williams 'eight to nine times' at the victim's flat in West Bromwich Road in Walsall.

Poselay had admitted stabbing Mr Williams, but denied attempted murder. But the jury unanimously found him guilty of the charge.

Giving evidence, Poselay said he had grabbed a knife from the kitchen after becoming 'irritated' when questioning Mr Williams over a missing laptop.

Poselay said he turned up at Mr Williams flat on January 8 to ask him about the laptop, but first smoked some cannabis, ate pasta and the pair watched a film.

Poselay said Williams became 'over defensive' and it made him 'agitated'. I walked into the kitchen. I grabbed a knife from next to the sink."

Poselay said he asked Mr Williams again to tell him the truth but he denied taking it.

He said: "That's when I became very angry. I started to pierce him with the knife. I was in a very different state of mind."

He said he remembered attacking him but had no idea how many times he had struck out with the knife and was not targeting any part of his body in particular. Poselay claimed the material which was on the laptop meant a lot to him.

After getting home, Poselay burned his clothes in the garden.

He said: "I was in a panicked state of mind."

Under cross examination, Poselay agreed with prosecutor Mr Paul Spratt that he had stabbed Mr Williams in a 'frenzied' attack, but denied that he had intended to kill him.

The court previously heard that Mr Williams managed to escape his attacker and staggered to the next flat where his neighbour called an ambulance.

Poselay had left before the police arrived but was arrested a short time later near his house in Jerome Road, Walsall, attempting to scale a garage of a neighbouring property.
