Montell Stephens, aged 18, of William Savage Way, was today charged in connection with the death of Sheriff Mbye in Northfield on April 17.

Stephens will appear before Birmingham magistrates tomorrow morning.

He is the third man to be charged with the murder of Mr Mbye, who died in hospital after being stabbed several times during a fight in Bristol Road South, Northfield.

Stephens was also injured during the dispute and was immediately taken to hospital.

While there, he was arrested on suspicion of murder on April 24 and was deemed fit for questioning yesterday evening.

Following the 18-year-old's death, two other men – Rakeem Riley, aged 18, of no fixed address and Omar Robinson, aged 21, from Rann Close in Ladywood – were arrested on suspicion of murder.

They were subsequently charged with the offence and were remanded into custody after appearing before the same court on April 21.

All men were believed to be friends with Mr Mbye – who was from Lee Bank, Birmingham - and Riley and Robinson had travelled to Northfield with him.

Detective Inspector Jim Munro said: "These charges are a significant step forward in our investigation and while the response from the public in Northfield and in Birmingham has been excellent, we remain keen to hear from anyone with information about this murder.

"Our investigations into exactly what happened will continue and you may notice more police in the Northfield area as we carry on with our inquiries."
