Police were called to Vicarage Road just after 9.30pm on Sunday after a man was found lying in the street.

The 41-year-old had been assaulted and was rushed to hospital with a serious head injury, where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

The road was cordoned off for several hours whilst forensic experts examined the scene and make enquiries in the local area.

Detective sergeant Leighton Shingles, from Force CID in Sandwell, is investigating the attack. He urged people to help identify two people seen in the area at the time.

"Our enquiries have led us to look for a man and a girl who were in the area of Vicarage Road on Sunday night," he said.

"We believe they were together, possibly father and daughter, and may be local.

"We need to trace this pair as part of our enquiries and urge anyone who recognises the descriptions to call us as soon as possible.

"The injured man is critically ill and it is important that we piece together what happened to him."

Detectives are looking for a white man, aged in his mid 30s to 40s, between 5ft 2in to 5ft 7in tall, of slim build, with very thin or even gaunt facial features, short mousey brown hair, who smokes. He was in the company of a young white girl, aged between 12 and mid teens, of slim build, around 5ft 5in tall, with loose curly or wavy hair, with dark roots but otherwise dyed red.

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
