Baby Dawood Hewitt died after a Mercedes ploughed into the back of the family's Seat Leon from behind at high speed. The young child and his mother were sat in stationary vehicle in lane three on the southbound carriageway near Hilton Park Services when the crash took place.

Thomas Fryer, who previously pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving at Stafford Crown Court, was today sentenced at Wolverhampton Crown Court to eight months in prison.

He received a driving ban for three years with an extended retest upon expiry.

Following the fatal smash, which happened at 4.25pm on May 26 last year, Dawood was taken by air ambulance to Birmingham Children's Hospital but died the following day.

Fortunately, Dawood's siblings - aged four and 18 months - who were also in the car, escaped with minor injuries.

Sergeant Ian Tanner, senior collision investigator at Staffordshire Police, said: "While no outcome could ever compensate for the loss of baby Dawood's life, I hope that today's result brings some closure to his grieving family.

"The tragic death of baby Dawood was a result of driving that was below the standard expected of safe drivers."
