Thieves opened the driver's door and dragged the pensioner out of his 15-year-old Toyota Avensis – which his daughter described as his pride and joy – as he started the engine.

They drove away in the car before crashing it just off Ettingshall Road a short time later.

Mr Green suffered a fractured hip, cuts and bruising and required surgery after he was taken to hospital following the attack at 11.30pm on Friday. His daughter Giselle Smith today released a photo of her father's injuries and has made an emotive plea for information.

She said: "My dad is the most amazing person. When I was two, my mother died and he single-handedly raised three children. He held down two jobs ? by day he was a sales rep and by night he was a semi-professional drummer.

"Music is my dad's life. He played jazz and big band music and as a young musician was in the Mike Green Galaxy band. His band was a regular resident band at the Civic in Wolverhampton for many years.Going to the Trumpet is his life, he loves going there as they play live music. I'm just hoping that he has got the confidence to go back.

"I can't begin to tell you how shocked we are, that someone could do this to my dad.

"He is the kindest, politest man I know, a real proper old fashioned gentleman and I am proud to call him my dad. He is recovering very slowly and is still in hospital. This has had a massive effect on him both physically and mentally."

Acting Detective Chief Inspector Pete Dunn, from the Force CID, said: "This was a motiveless and cowardly attack on a vulnerable and elderly man.

"I will do everything within my power to bring these culprits to justice and I am appealing for the community's help.

"We believe that three people may have been involved in the carjacking and believe the answer to who was involved lies within the local community."
