Almost 900 fewer buses a day will use Wolverhampton's new £22.5 million bus station compared to the one it has replaced, it was revealed today.

It is a reduction of around a quarter of the buses that used to pass through the old station. Wolverhampton's former station was the busiest in the region handling 200 services an hour.

But, following a review of the bus network in Wolverhampton it has emerged that some of the most popular routes in the city will no longer pass through the Pipers Row station.

As part of the review, dozens of services have also been merged and re-numbered. The new number 1, 2, 3 and 4 buses will not go to the main station despite the major investment.

Transport bosses today said it was to make the services more efficient by stopping at more places in the city centre, just not at the main station.

The number 1 Dudley to Tettenhall Wood, the number 2 Warstones to Bushbury, the number 3 Fordhouses to Castlecroft and the number 4 Pendeford to Spring Hill have been formed by merging the 501 and 558, the 512 and 598, the 593 and 543 and the 504, 505, 506 and 507 services.
