The pitched roof at the church had been steadily deteriorating over several years, with rain water finding its way through in multiple sites, causing damage to the internal fabric and making the church suffer from damp.

A £72,000 roof replacement project was launched by the church and was made possible following a grant of £50,000 from Enovert Community Trust, provided through the Landfill Communities Fund (LCF).

Reverend Rosanne Wilshire, Priest in Charge at St Stephen’s, said: “The church and adjoining church hall are highly valued and widely used by community groups.

“Reaching out to, and serving, our community is extremely important to us as a church and it is a joy that we will now be able to offer an inviting (and dry!) venue for people to come and find welcome, hospitality and friendship. Thank you Enovert Community Trust!”.

In addition to its regular services, St Stephen’s is used by many different community groups, including regular children’s activity days, an annual play week, community fairs, cubs and scouts, and by Willenhall Singers for rehearsals and concerts. The new roof will enable more groups to use the space, especially in the winter months.

Angela Haymonds, Trust Manager of Enovert Community Trust, said: “The Trustees were very pleased to be able to support this project for a church that is used so much by the local community. Hopefully the new roof will keep users dry for many years to come.”
