Toto's story highlights importance of greyhound sponsorship scheme

Blindness risk won't stop Toto enjoying life to the full

Home Run Hounds' newest sponsor dog, Toto, is a happy, playful greyhound with a big personality and an even bigger fan club. But behind his cheeky nature lies a lifelong medical condition that means he will always need a little extra help.

When Toto arrived in Home Run Hounds' care, volunteers noticed a problem with his eyesight. Further investigations revealed he had Pannus, a progressive eye disease that can eventually lead to blindness if left untreated. Thankfully, the condition was caught early and, with twice-daily medication, his symptoms can be managed. However, he will require treatment and monitoring for the rest of his life.

Because of his ongoing medical needs, Toto now enjoys life in long-term foster care with one of Home Run Hounds' experienced volunteers. There, he spends his days playing with his greyhound friends, chasing toys, keeping a watchful eye on the front gate and, of course, making sure dinner arrives on time.

While Toto is thriving, his story highlights the vital role sponsorship plays in helping Home Run Hounds care for greyhounds with additional needs. Not every dog that comes into the charity's care can be rehomed quickly, and some require long-term medical treatment or specialist support.

Supporters can sponsor an individual greyhound such as Toto, sponsor a dog as a gift for a loved one, or even provide sponsorship through their business. Another popular option is kennel sponsorship. By sponsoring a kennel, supporters help every greyhound that passes through that space rather than just one dog.

Businesses and individuals who sponsor a kennel also have their name displayed on it, demonstrating their support for retired racing greyhounds while helping multiple hounds on their journey to a new life.

Every penny raised through sponsorship goes directly towards the care of Home Run Hounds' greyhounds, helping to provide food, bedding, veterinary treatment and everything else needed to keep the dogs happy, healthy and comfortable.

Toto may have some challenges ahead of him, but thanks to the generosity of sponsors and supporters, he can look forward to a future filled with care, comfort and plenty of tennis balls.

If Toto's story has touched your heart and you would like to help provide care for greyhounds like him, sponsorship is available from as little as £3 per month. For more information, contact Home Run Hounds directly.
