Stourbridge Chess Club honours members after challenging season
Club pays tribute to stalwarts and rising talent at AGM
The chess season has come to an end, and it has been a challenging one for Stourbridge Chess Club, with several teams facing relegation. However, this is not necessarily a negative outcome, as it means that in most cases members will compete next season against opponents closer to their own playing strength.

The club also sadly lost two stalwarts and prolific players, Eric Horwill and Paul Sharratt, whose passing had a significant impact on the club community.
At the club’s AGM, the following awards were presented:
- Most reliable club member – Sydneys Willets Trophy: Nic Fallowfield. Nic consistently responded promptly to emails, provided lifts to fellow team members, and took time to share his games with other members.
- Most improved player – Dennis Fernihough Trophy: Che Duljeet Adams. At the start of the season his ECF rating was 1631, rising to 1704, breaking through the 1700 barrier.
- Contribution to Stourbridge Chess Club – President’s Cup: Dan Billingham, who stepped up to take on the role of club secretary.
The club’s summer tournament begins on June 16. It is a five-round Swiss competition, with one round played every fortnight. The event is open to members, prospective members and friends. Further details are available at stourbridgechess.org.uk/Summer_2026.html.
The club meets every Tuesday evening at 7.30pm at the Queen’s Head pub on Enville Street and is looking to welcome new members to strengthen its squads for the coming season. Anyone interested in joining should contact Dan Billingham on 07752 046656 or visit stourbridgechess.org.uk for more information.
