A Staffordshire man who was once on the brink of taking his own life has launched his own business with the mission of helping other men speak out about mental health struggles.

Following two years of therapy and rebuilding his wellbeing, James Bertram now uses his story as an events speaker to inspire hope, resilience, and openness among men.

The father-of-two launched Codsall-based business Mind by JB CIC after completing South Staffordshire Council’s Start in South Staffs programme, funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, designed to support new founders in setting up and growing their enterprises locally.

“I was in an incredibly dark place back in 2023, which very nearly saw me take my own life – but thanks to my wife and the support I received through therapy, I now have the strength and a toolkit to better manage my mental health, ultimately making me a better person for both myself and my family,” said 58-year-old James.

“That life-changing experience is why I am now determined to give back and inspire others to make the changes they need in their lives to overcome their own struggles.

“And the support from South Staffordshire Council has enabled me to make my aspirations a reality.”

James says that speaking openly and without judgement helps men recognise ‘the resilience and strength that comes from sharing your story rather than hiding it’.

Mind by JB CIC focuses on raising awareness, building resilience and starting honest conversations about mental health.

The business also raises funds for good causes – so far having raised £211,000, he has supported The Kris Boyd Charity and Strongmen, with plans for a stronger local focus in the months ahead.

Councillor Mark Evans, cabinet member for planning and business enterprise at South Staffordshire Council, said: “Mind by JB CIC is a transformative example of how lived experience can drive real change.

“We are incredibly proud to have supported James through our Start in South Staffs programme and look forward to seeing the positive impact his work continues to have in our communities.”
